Bill splitting

Tap New bill and fill in the name, amount, currency, due date, and an optional category and description. Toggle Variable cost if the amount changes each period — you'll enter the actual amount when recording a payment.

Mark a bill Private to hide it from all other family members.

Open a bill and tap Add split to assign a portion to one or more family members. Enter the amount each person owes. Splits are tracked independently — each person can settle their portion separately.

Open a bill and tap Add payment to record that someone has paid. Select who paid, the amount, the date, and an optional note.

For bills with a single split, settling that split automatically closes the bill. For bills with two or more splits, each person settles their portion independently — once all portions are settled, tap Mark bill paid to close the bill.

Enable Recurring on a bill to generate future occurrences automatically. Supported intervals are: weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, and annually. Optionally set a specific day of the month for monthly bills.

Turn on Auto-advance to have FamilyChaos automatically create the next occurrence when the current one is paid. Set Reminder to receive a push notification a chosen number of days before the due date.

Use the status tabs — Upcoming, Due Soon, Overdue, and Paid — to focus on what needs attention. Adults can also toggle My bills only to see only bills they created or are split into.

Organise bills by category — Rent, Utilities, Subscriptions, and so on. Manage your categories in Settings → Customise. A default set of common categories is created when you start a new family.

If your family doesn't use bill splitting, FamilyChaos automatically switches to a simplified cash-flow view. Instead of the split and settlement UI, you see a summary bar showing:

• Due This Month — total amount of bills due in the current calendar month.
• Paid — total amount already marked paid this month.
• Remaining — the difference between due and paid.

In simple mode, each bill card shows a single Mark Paid button — one tap closes the bill with no extra steps. The mode is determined automatically from your data; if you add a split to any bill, FamilyChaos switches to split mode and shows the full settlement UI.
