Recipe Book

Save your family's favourite recipes in one place. Import from a website or a CookLang file, search by name or filter by tag, and send ingredients straight to a list.

Adding a recipe

Tap New recipe and fill in the details: title, optional description, servings, prep time, and cook time. Upload a photo to make the card easy to recognise at a glance.

Add ingredients one at a time — enter the name, quantity, and unit for each. Drag ingredients to reorder them.

Add steps in order, one instruction per step. Steps are numbered automatically and can be reordered by dragging.

Importing a recipe

Tap Import at the top of the Recipe Book to bring in a recipe without typing it out. Choose a tab:

  • From URL — paste a link to a recipe page. FamilyChaos reads the title, ingredients, steps, servings, and times from the page. This works best with sites that publish structured recipe data; some sites block automated access, in which case you'll see a message suggesting another way to add the recipe.
  • CookLang file — drag and drop, or browse for, a .cook file written in the open CookLang recipe format.

The imported recipe opens straight away so you can review it and make any edits.

Exporting a recipe

Open a recipe and tap the export icon to download it as a .cook file. CookLang files are plain text, so you can share them with friends, keep them as a backup, or open them in any other CookLang-compatible app.

Tags

Assign one or more tags to a recipe (for example: Dinner, Vegetarian, Quick). Tags appear as filter chips above the recipe grid. Selecting multiple tags narrows results to recipes that match all selected tags, making it easy to find exactly what you are looking for.

Searching recipes

Type in the search box at the top of the Recipes page to filter by title. Search is live — results update as you type. Combine search with tag filters to narrow results further, and sort by Name A–Z or Recently added.

Private recipes

Toggle Private when creating or editing a recipe to keep it visible only to you. Private recipes are not shown to other family members and cannot be added to the Meal Planner by anyone else.

Editing and deleting

Open a recipe card and tap the edit icon to update any field — title, photo, ingredients, steps, or tags. To delete a recipe, open it and choose Delete from the options menu. Deletion is permanent and will remove the recipe from any future meal plan slots it was assigned to.

Adding ingredients to a list

On any recipe, tap Add to List to append all ingredients to an existing list or create a new one. This is most powerful when used from the Meal Planner, which aggregates ingredients from every recipe in your weekly plan in one tap.
