Password Vault

Everything in the vault is encrypted on your device before it leaves your browser. FamilyChaos stores only the encrypted ciphertext — your passphrase never leaves your device and is never sent to the server.

There is no password reset option. If you lose your passphrase and all your backup codes, your vault data cannot be recovered. Write your passphrase down and keep it somewhere safe before you start adding entries.

Open the Vault section from the sidebar or navigation. The first time you open it, you'll be asked to create a vault passphrase of at least 10 characters.

After submitting, FamilyChaos generates 8 backup codes. Copy or print them and store them somewhere secure — each code can be used once to regain access if you forget your passphrase.

Your vault locks automatically after 15 minutes of inactivity, or when you close the browser tab. Enter your passphrase to unlock it. If you've forgotten your passphrase, tap Use a backup code instead to recover access and set a new passphrase.

The vault supports four entry types:

• Login — username, password, website URL, and optional TOTP 2FA secret.
• Wi-Fi — network name (SSID) and password.
• Secure note — free-text notes for anything that doesn't fit another type.
• Card — card number or PIN, issuer, and optional notes.

Tap New entry to open the entry form. Fill in the fields and tap Add entry to save.

For login entries, the built-in password generator can create a strong random password. Set the length and choose which character types to include, then tap Generate.

To edit an entry, tap it in the list to open the detail view, then tap the edit icon. To delete an entry, open it and tap Delete and then Confirm delete.

Adults can share entries with the whole family by toggling Shared with family when creating or editing an entry. Shared entries are encrypted with a separate family vault key so all adult members can read them.

The family vault key is distributed automatically the next time each member unlocks their vault. Until another adult has unlocked their vault and shared the key with you, the shared section will appear locked.

You receive 8 single-use backup codes when you set up your vault. Each code can be redeemed once to recover access and create a new passphrase. Once a code is used it cannot be reused. Store your codes somewhere safe — printed or in a trusted password manager outside FamilyChaos.

Open the vault settings to export your entries as a CSV file. The export is decrypted on your device and downloaded locally — nothing is transmitted to the server. Use this to migrate to another password manager or to keep an offline backup.

The Password Vault is included in all paid plans. If your subscription lapses, the vault enters a read-only grace period of 7 days — you can still read and export your entries but cannot add or edit them.

After the grace period your vault data becomes inaccessible. Resubscribing restores full access immediately.
