Account & settings
Settings is split into sections for your family, customisation, billing, and security. Personal preferences (name, photo, theme, notifications) live on your Profile page.
Your profile
Tap your avatar in the top navigation bar to open your Profile. From there you can update your display name, photo, email, password, timezone, time format, theme, and notification preferences. See the Profile doc for full details.
Family Settings (adults only)
Open Settings → Family Settings to manage family-wide configuration:
- Family name — the name shown across the app and in invite emails.
- Default timezone — used for members who haven't set their own timezone.
- Default time format — 12-hour or 24-hour, applied to members who haven't set their own preference.
- Weather location — the city shown in the dashboard weather widget. Data comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
Customise
Open Settings → Customise to manage shared display options:
- Event labels — colour labels used to categorise calendar events. All family members see the same label set.
- List categories — categories for grouping items inside a list.
- Bill categories — categories for organising bills (Rent, Utilities, Subscriptions, etc.).
- Wall display — configure the full-screen ambient display mode for a mounted screen or TV.
Members (adults only)
Manage who is in your family from Settings → My Family. Invite new adults or children, copy invite links, and remove members who no longer need access. Only adults can access this section.
Subscription and billing
FamilyChaos is free for 30 days, then $3.99 CAD/month or $24.99 CAD/year. All features are included in both plans with no member limits.
Manage your subscription, view invoices, and update payment details from Settings → The Bills. Monthly subscriptions are cancelled at the end of the current period. Annual subscriptions are eligible for a pro-rata refund of unused complete months within 30 days of cancellation.
Exporting your data
Open Settings → Security & Advanced and scroll to the Data & Backup section. From there you can download a full export of your family's data as a JSON file. The export includes all calendar events, lists, bills, notes, chores, meal plans, and recipes.
The export is generated on demand and downloaded directly to your device. Nothing is stored server-side. Use it to keep an offline backup or migrate your data. The export includes inventory assets and their service history alongside all other family content.
Deleting your account
There are two ways to delete your FamilyChaos account:
Option 1 — Self-service inside the app (immediate)
Open your Profile (tap your avatar in the top bar), scroll to the Account section, and tap Delete my account. This is a three-step process:
- Choose what happens to your content. For each type of content you created — calendar events, lists, bills, notes, meal plan entries, recipes, and shared vault entries — choose to either Keep it for the family (your name is removed) or Delete it permanently.
- Review and confirm. A summary shows exactly which categories will be deleted. Enter your password to proceed.
- Done. Your account is removed and you are signed out immediately.
Some data is always removed when you delete your account, regardless of your choices:
- Your private vault entries (only you held the decryption key)
- External calendar connections you set up, and all events imported from them
- Chores you created
- Your list pins and bill split assignments
- Your chore assignments
Shared vault entries you created default to Keep — other family members continue to have access. Switch the toggle to Delete if you want them removed for everyone.
If you are the only adult in the family, you must add another adult member before your account can be deleted this way.
Option 2 — Deletion request form (processed within 30 days)
If you can no longer sign in or prefer to submit a written request, visit familychaos.ca/account/delete and enter the email address associated with your account. No login is required. Our team will process your request within 30 days in accordance with applicable Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA).
You will receive a confirmation email when your request is submitted. Because this route requires manual processing, we cannot offer the same per-category data choices available through the in-app flow — all personal data associated with the account will be removed.
Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone regardless of which option you choose.
Deleting the entire family (adults only)
To permanently delete your family and all its data, open Settings → Security & Advanced and scroll to the Delete Family section. This option is only available to adult members.
You will be asked to confirm by typing the exact family name and entering your password. Once confirmed, all family data is permanently deleted — members, content, billing history, and vault data — and every member is signed out immediately.
This action cannot be undone. Export your data first if you want to keep a copy — see Exporting your data above.
Data retention
FamilyChaos retains your data only as long as needed to provide the service, in accordance with applicable Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA).
- Active accounts — data is stored for as long as your family account remains active and subscribed.
- After subscription cancellation — your family data is retained for 90 days after the account is deactivated. If you resubscribe within that window, all data is restored automatically. After 90 days, data is permanently deleted from our servers.
- After self-service account deletion — your personal data (name, email, password hash, session tokens, and any content you chose to delete) is removed immediately. Content you chose to keep is anonymised — your name is detached from it — and retained for the family.
- After family deletion — all data for all members is permanently and immediately deleted from our servers with no retention period.
Stripe retains billing records (invoices, payment history) as required by financial regulations, independently of your FamilyChaos account status. To request deletion of Stripe records, contact us at support@familychaos.ca.
