To Do

Share multi-step work with your family. Each item has a status, an optional assignee and due date, and a checklist of sub-tasks.

To Do, Lists, or Chores?

Use To Do for projects and errands that take more than one step — planning a birthday party, getting the car ready for winter, or packing for a move. Use Lists for things you simply tick off, like groceries, and Chores for household jobs that repeat.

Creating a list

Open To Do from the sidebar or the dashboard's Quick access grid and tap New list. Give the list a name. Turn on Private if only you should see it.

Drag lists into any order, or use Move up and Move down if you use a keyboard. Rename or delete a list from its ⋯ menu. Deleting a list removes it and everything in it for the whole family.

Adding items

Open a list and tap New item. Each item shows who added it and has:

  • Status — To Do, In Progress, or Done.
  • Assignee — one family member, or Unassigned.
  • Due date — optional. Overdue items are marked Overdue.
  • Sub-tasks — tap to open the item's checklist and break the work into steps. The item shows how many are done, such as 2 of 5 done.

Drag items and sub-tasks to reorder them, or use Move up and Move down. On phones, the status, assignee, due date, and sub-task count (“2/5”) appear as small chips so each item stays compact.

Who can change what

  • Adults and the member who created an item can change everything on it — its name, assignee, due date, status, and sub-tasks — and delete it.
  • The assignee can change the item's status and its sub-tasks.
  • Children can create their own lists and items, and change the ones they made.

Private lists

A private list, and everything on it, is seen only by the member who made it. Items on a private list have no assignees.

The list's creator can switch it between private and family-wide from the ⋯ menu (Make private or Make family-wide). Making a shared list private asks first, because it clears the list's assignees and any notifications other members had about it.

Filtering a list

Filter a list by status and by assignee — for example, show only the items assigned to Me that aren't done yet. On phones, filters open from the funnel button. Your filters are remembered on each device. Reordering pauses while a filter is on.

Due dates on the calendar

Open items with a due date appear on the Calendar on the day they're due. Adults can hide them from their own calendar in Settings → Calendar → To Do.

Assignments and reminders

The Inbox bell at the top of the To Do page shows items newly assigned to you, with a count of unread ones. Tap an entry to open that item.

With To Do assignments turned on in your Profile notifications, you also get a push notification when an item is assigned to you. Assignees get a reminder at 8:00 in their time zone when an item is due soon, and again when it is overdue. Choose how many days ahead you're reminded with To Do reminder lead time (0 reminds you on the day). See Notifications.

Working offline

Changes you make to To Do lists while offline are saved on your device and sent once you reconnect, without creating duplicates.

When a member leaves

When a member leaves the family or deletes their account, their private To Do lists are deleted and they're removed as assignee from every item. Lists and items they added for the family stay, shown as added by a former member.
